American Museum in Britain

On Saturday we went to the American Museum to celebrate the opening of the NewAmerican Garden.

We arrived to the deafening sound of cannon fire!
How the soldiers kept their uniforms clean I do not know.
White pants in battle!!

Hearing stories about the cat o' nine tails.

Prairie planting with Native American shrubs and perennials.

View over George Washington's garden, Mount Vernon.

An enviable crop of squash.
And who's here?

A rather imperious-looking Mrs GW and her hubby.

I couldn't resist photographing this lady with her tussle mussie, the colours were so pleasing with her outfit.
Herbs and dye flowers hanging to dry from the ceiling.

A swing band played to listeners sitting on the grass amphitheatre.
The music and the singers were great
and the grass was hardly damp at all!
The new gardens were designed by a Washington DC-based landscape architecture firm, Ochre Van Sweden using many Native American plants in the free-form style made famous by the firm's founder members. The photograph below is of one the firms American projects.
Now I fancy a riot of colour in my own garden for next year!

  1. Wow, what beautiful gardens. Actually, Thomas Jefferson was the major gardener. His gardens were spectacular. I went to Mt. Vernon once and they sold plants that had grown there. I bought lavender and the plants grew huge.

    1. I don't expect to see the real Mount Vernon as I'm no longer a good candidate for long haul flights, but blogging gives me a window to view some wonderful parts of the world. (A favourite blog is spare parts and pics with images of a simply stunning landscape, the sort of environment I've never experienced.)

    1. You make it sound beautiful, Parsnip. Our British Mount Vernon is set with views over a green valley that is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. No river though!

  3. My mate designed the new garden. I won't say what he said about Mr Titchmarsh.

    1. It was indeed a lovely day. The re-enactors were good fun, full of information about the period and with a display of cannon balls, cat-o-nine tails and the like. I always thought that red jackets for soldiers must be absolute madness but was told that their guns were so inaccurate that only chance rather than skill might hit you!

    1. I know, my favourite photo is of the pumpkin patch, it seems to tell me more of a story than the flowers.
