A walk to the river

When the children were small we would often take the six field walk and head down to the river where they could splash about and guddle for small brown trout. The six fields lie to the south of the village and are owned by the householders on that side of the street, extensions of their gardens. There is a right of way across the fields, each one accessed by a stile.

The stiles seem to have become narrower over the years!

The river water was very low.

We walked back by the road. The verges are full of wild flowers because nothing has been sprayed here. It is lovely to see the profusion of different plants.

When we got back to the village we found our neighbours searching out somewhere shady to sit!

This house, next door to where my parents lived, was formerly the vicarage  and the door on the right led to the village room where beetle drives were held. The Rev. Mr Kidd was the man who married us, fifty-four years ago.

    1. Beetle drive is an old pencil and paper game for four people per table where you add the various parts of a beetle depending on the numbers on the shake of a dice. The first person to complete a whole insect is the winner. A very simple game from a different era!

    1. My photo just shows the end of the vicarage with the small courtyard to the village room. The whole vicarage frontage is a very handsome place.

  10. One might wonder whether the Rev. Mr Kidd always told the truth. We too were married in church at the express insistence of my mother-in-law, an avowed atheist. Since we too were, still are, atheists I timidly asked if a registry office would suffice. "No," said MiL, "people will think the bride's pregnant." Sixty-one years ago.

The irritable Canon Hough officiated. He failed to instruct us in the necessary ups and downs of the ceremony, leaving me blundering. I decided that his surname was a homonym for the conveyance he preferred to take when departing.

    1. Happily now people don't give a toss as to whether the bride is pregnant or not.
Mr Kidd was a great character, he and his wife, gentle and highly educated 'Oirish', were much appreciated by my parents, Mrs Kidd for her lovely buttermilk baking and Mr Kidd for his conversation. His sermons, to the very few of us in his congregation, (it is a chapel dale) were very erudite.
I was promised a honey comb from his hives if I were good. It never happened!
