Today

This morning I opened the curtains to find this slight dusting. Snow was still falling but it soon turned to rain and the day was cold and wet and rather miserable. Our wood store is full to the brim in readiness for the winter ahead and we had the log burner loaded and throwing out heat long before we sat down to lunch.  I've still got bulbs to plant, I just need one decent day to get them in the ground, but I'm starting to think that I might have missed my chance! I'm not complaining, however, because my home is warm and dry while elsewhere people are having to deal with such extremes of weather, not least my favourite city, beautiful Venice. What a tragedy that corruption and inertia has resulted in no proper sea defences for such an exceptional place.
It is a city that I've visited many times over the years, on several trips having to dry out my footwear overnight. I do hope that the Italian government will get their act together before it is too late.

  3. I fear that Venice will likely not be well cared for. We were there last year and many parts looked run down and badly in need of repair or maintenance, and there seemed to be graffiti everywhere.

    1. I've been traveling to Venice for well over half a century and have become used to it's dilapidated state. Once, after a small earthquake, it was REALLY a mess - but I still love it! Tragic that somewhere so special does not get the help that it needs.

  4. I've never been to Venice, since almost all my trips to Italy took me way further South - my first husband was from Sicily, and we spent every summer on the island with his family there.
You are right, it is not to be taken for granted to have a dry, warm home. So many had to leave their homes due to the recent flooding, or are still not back since the one at the end of July.

    1. You must have some wonderful summer memories. I have only traveled through Sicily on my way to the islands but keep meaning to visit properly some day. (I'm an avid watcher of Montalbano!)

  5. Hello to England and thank you for visiting my blog! Your garden looks very beautiful.
We seem to have two favourite countries in common: UK and Italy. :)
It has been snowing here in Eastern Finland already several times but in these days it's raining.
    Have a lovely weekend!

    1. Hello Sara, I'm sure that . living in Finland, you will know what a decent snowfall looks like! Our little dusting was gone in no time and we were left with just a muddy ground.
Good wishes for your weekend also.

  6. How wonderful to hear from you all the way from England, which in my opinion is a gardening paradise full of the most beautiful gardens and the most knowledgeable gardeners.

Good luck with planting the rest of you bulbs, I am sure they will be worth the extra effort.

    1. Dear Vie, well it is so nice for me, being a nosey so-an-so, to flit around the world in Blogland and see what people are up to. Hope we both manage to detour bulbs planted!
