This weekend

I'm sweeping leaves and eating pears.

Mixed weather and cold nights are bringing the leaves down from the trees and each day I add another pile to the overflowing compost bay. Its an enjoyable task.

All the pears have ripened now and are at the juice-running-down-your-chin stage. I shall bake with the ones that are left and freeze the results.

The sweet peppers in the greenhouse are not ripening so I've brought a few pots into the warmth of the kitchen to sit in front of the French windows.  At last, they are reddening up.

At this time of year the sun, when it shines, slants right into the room. It is very welcome!

  1. Only 4 pears here this year. Gave it a radical pruning in the winter. Apples are good though.

    1. I've had pear crops like that! I've gardened organically for years but this spring finally admitted defeat and sprayed the pear tree to eradicate the pear midge that has wrecked promising fruit year after year. I'll be spraying again next spring!

  2. Our leaves are very very late this year, in turning and falling, here in northern-most Indiana. I started autumn yard clean-up just today and that's late too! :) Your pears sound wonderful. I love a nice juicy pear! ~Andrea xoxo

    1. We also still have quite a lot of leaf drop to come.

  3. That sunlit room looks very inviting and cosy! I have had pears from the supermarket a few times in late summer, but they were not the juice running down your chin kind.

  4. The photo of 3 pears is beautiful. What will you bake with them?

  5. I'm drawn to a sunny room as well. I don't use window coverings, (with the exception of bedrooms), so I can soak up the sun. Those pears look delicious.

    1. Like you, I like to capture every bit of sunshine that I can. I'm not looking forward to the sun-starved months ahead.

  6. Now that's proper multitasking - sweeping leaves whilst eating pears! I love the low lying sun at this time of year, but it seems to be upsetting the vampires of the house. I hope you continue to enjoy the lovely leaf composting. Lulu x

    1. Multitasking is an essential female skill, but on this occasion I didn't try it!

  9. I think that all things considered pears are an underrated fruit. But I enjoy them any way you can serve them. After dinner pears with a good brie is the stuff of ecstacy!
