Picking peas

Is there something that you do that acts as a short circuit to a specific other time? Whenever I pick peas I recall being in Auntie Jo's garden. I was sent out with Crawford to pick enough peas for lunch; two households sitting down to eat meant a lot of peas. Auntie Jo and her husband were GPs in the Scottish borders and we would call in on them when we were on our way to visit relatives further north. Their surgery was in the home, as was usual in those days and it was busy household. They employed a cook cum housekeeper so Crawford and I needed only to gather the pea pods, the cook would shell them. She was probably wise to the fact that if two small children were shelling they would also be busy eating! Fresh raw peas taste delicious.
My peas are now on stream and today I had a good picking. My mind goes straight back to my childhood and to Auntie Jo.
Its funny how strong some random memories can be. People who came to our wedding fifty-two years ago recall me throwing off my shoes to dance in my bare feet but I don't recall doing any such thing!

  1. Tastes, scents and music can act like a time machine in our minds, can't they! I posted about this 9 years ago on my blog; click here if you are interested.
Yes, fresh peas are delicious! I am sure your garden yields a good crop of whatever you have planted, it looks so good.

  2. That's great to have such a memory, and yes, there are certain things that bring back memories for me. Especially dandelions. My grandmother was very proper (think Queen Elizabeth)...she used to go out in the summer and pull out the dandelions from her lawn...wearing a nice dress, her pearl necklace, heels, a proper hat and of course, her purse on her arm lol...she was a wonderful lady and that memory sticks in my head every time I see a dandelion!

    1. What a lovely picture you paint of your grandmother (although the heels and hat make me think that her weeding technique wasn't the best!) I'm sure that you smile when the dandelions show their heads.

  3. Ohhhh yess, I've got some delicious memories to home baked bread from my grandmother. She used to spread some also home made Mayo on a slice of it and to hand it then to us children. That was so delicious… Maybe even more so, because we were allowed to eat it outside, sitting on the front stairs. I tried to cook that Mayo by myself, but it never had the same flavour as the one of my granny. Enjoy the peas, they must be yummie.

  4. I get images of sitting on the porch shelling peas with both gr-mas. They captured the peas in their aprons. I didn't. Shorts didn't work well. Fresh peas, oh my.

    1. I have a feeling that you were like me, Susan, and ate many of the peas that you had picked. The grannies knew to hang on to the contents of their pinnies!
