30 plus degrees.

This is the sort of weather when I'm pleased to have a shade garden, there are plenty of places to be out of the sun.
The garden is bursting with colour. At the moment the stars of the show are abutilon suntense and Sambucas negrus. The abutilon has flopped all over the planting beneath it but is looking so lovely that I have left it be. I'll cut back once the flowers are over.
But the flowers that I wait for most eagerly are the roses. I brought little cuttings from our previous home and now, three years later, they are bulking up well. I stuck one or two in a very inhospitable spot beside the drive, with small hopes of success but Constance Spry is giving it her best shot.
Some of the rose names I have forgotten!
I've been going to the allotment in the cool of the evening to do some much-needed watering, watering cans only, it is tough work! On Bank Holiday Monday I couldn't resist a swim in the sea. We went early, before the crowds. It was slack tide and although the water was cold it felt wonderful to come back to a warm beach without the more usual wind that threatens to take the skin off your bones! We were home in the cool of the garden before nine, feeling rather pleased purselves!

  1. Your garden looks so cool and bright. A perfect retreat. Our roses were in full bloom a week or so ago. Theyre a gorgeous show and one of them has a lovely aroma.
As for swimming..... you're brave! If you can get in then it's wonderful, I know. But I'm waiting till July 😀

    1. Roses are the flowers that truly delight me. As for getting in the water in May, it is easier to do when you know you will be able to get warm once you are back on the beach! Elder daughter was home from London at the weekend and we took flasks of hot drinks with us just to make sure.

  2. Your garden is what most of us dream of. Beauty everywhere. I have tried taking rose cuttings with zero success, but will try again, this time buying some of that rooting stuff. I have never done that, so maybe it will work?
A dip in the sea sounds heavenly. You live in heaven, I am convinced!

    1. I don't bother with rooting powder. I suggest that you jist stick a good few cuttings into a quiet bit of your garden and forget about them for a year. Here's hoping!

    1. There is always a shady area to sit. Usually more shade than I would like!

  4. An early swim in the Sea and then retreat to your beautiful garden - what could be better during the current heatwave! Maybe someone serving you a well chilled cocktail while you're lounging in the shade, or an ice cream...

  5. An early morning swim feels wonderful, the perfect start to a day. A cocktail would be lost on me but a rum and raisin icecream in a crisp cornet would be very much appreciated. (Although at this time of year a hot drink would be better!)
