Autumn

Autumn is definitely here and it is not very Keatsian, we are having heavy downpours and strong winds. I have gathered most of the allotment crop. Poor pickings because of the drought and my imability to keep things alive when the only option is to water by hand. I'm grateful for those crops that gave me something.
The alliums were very good in the garden this year and we've enjoyed the dried seed heads as much as the flowers. I've bought some more bulbs for next year.
The rose cuttings that I took earlirt in the year seem to be doing well but there is winter to get through before I get too confident about them.
I found a small frog in the bowl that I'd put out for the robin!
The garden is very green now, withou much colour. We spent the morning clearing gutters of pine needles and putting away the rest of the outdoor furniture.
When the rain looks as though it will hold off for a while we go for a walk on the beach. The tourists have gone but the local women's swimmimg club, aptly named the bluetits, were all in the sea enjoying the surf.
I was quite happy to return to the warmth of my kitchen and a second flowering of small orchids.

  1. Yes, in a drought year we are always grateful for whatever our garden can give us. Your gleanings look great.
How you must love to ramble about your garden! It just looks magical. And the beach.. what joy to be able to go there whenever you like!

    1. Yes, you are right, to be grateful for whatever we get! The pear tree, which had been pretty much ignored, has delivered a tasty crop of fruit in spite of lack of rain. I shall treat it to a bag of compost!

  2. Your tomatoes and courgettes look great. It seems as though autumn has come very quickly this year for you. While you have had drought we seem to have had constant rain.

    1. The tomato variety was 'Sungold'. It cropped far better than the red varieties. I shall grow them again next year.

  3. It looks like a rather good harvest to my inexpert eye, in spite of the drought.
    The Bluetits made me smile!

    1. I love going down to the beach for the light and the space. Also to swim in the sea, but only in good weather!

    1. Some things in the garden have taken quite a knock from the drought and a few things have died. But we've had such downpours that everything else is very green and a bit of a jungle.

    1. I love the big open expanse of sea and sky at the beach. We are very enclosed in our house and garden and the coastal space is like that of the moors in my native Yorkshire.

  7. We're still at least a month away from any kind of fall weather. Nevertheless the tallows and oaks are dropping leaves like crazy. Maybe because it's been so dry.

    1. We have been sweeping and clearing pine needles , cones and acorns for weeks but the leaves have yet to fall. The acorns are very prolific, an attempt to reproduce, possibly, because the trees were under so much stress.

  8. I had to laugh at the name of the women swimmers - very apt! Autumn is creeping in very slowly here, with cool mornings and warm sunny afternoons. We need more rain and that will come soon. Your garden produce all looks wonderful.

    1. Yes, a great name for cold water swimmers! All water tubs are full here, with no complaints from me after such a long period with nothing. Today, however, was warm and sunny and we enjoyed it very much!

Yes, I also like autumn, especially when it is the 'Indian summer' variety, mild and warm. Ours has been rather wild so far.
