Old skills

We are on grandparenting duties and it involves reviving old skills. On the days when the weather puts castles, moats and speedboats in sand out of the question, not to mention, "Nana, come in the sea!" we are busy with other activities that haven't been called on for years. Kite flying - how do you get the blasted thing to behave properly? We had plenty of wind but the kite was intent on swooping in an attempt to sever heads from shoulders. The grandson loved it!
When we had exhausted ourselves with that we walked around Hengistbury Head, stopping for a while to admire/covet the beach huts at Mudeford. Unlike most of the Bournemouth beach huts the ones at Mudeford permit the occupants to sleep there. The huts are usually passed down through the families and rarely come on the market. When they do, don't ask the price - it's eye-watering!

  1. How wonderful to have beach huts that you can stay in overnight. They sound like hen's teeth.

  2. I agree with Susan - it must be great to have a beach hut equipped to spend the night. But where do people go to the toilet and have a shower? Those are the most limiting factors for me when it comes to camping, for instance.
Our Dad used to fly kites with me and my sister every late summer and autumn. He was as good at making a kite as at flying them, home-made or bought. My favourite one was a bought kite in the shape of and painted like a big brown eagle. In my imagination, he came alive up in the air.

    1. Librarian, I suppose I assumed there would be bathroom facilities if you could stay in them.

    2. They don't seem quite big enough for that, but of course I don't know for sure :-)

    3. What a lovely memory to have of your dad and your brown eagle. We had so much fun with our misbehaving kite! Don't know what the toilet arrangements are for those desirable huts!

  3. Your adventures in grandparenting made me laugh! Getting those kites to stay up in the air is indeed tricky! I love the beach huts. It would be so much fun to have one, but not too likely for most.

    1. We did a great deal of laughing too. It is so good to be able to relive childhood through the antics of our grandson.

  4. I'd love a beach hut where you're allowed to sleep! Not surprised they are expensive. Even the ordinary sort seem to go for a fortune.

    1. I had planned to rent a Bournemouth beach hut for the summer - until I found out the price!

  5. Re. kites. A more substantial tail might have worked. Old-fashioned; a string of bow-ties but in fancy colours. Adding more until the balance was established.
