Sidmouth

On our way to Sidmouth we stopped off at the inland town of Colyton to look around the church. It has a Saxon cross dating from the time of King Alfred and a cheery looking Sir John Pole reclining at ease on his coffin. He has no dog at his heels but a very obliging wife resting at his back! Wandering round the town we saw this impressive gateway, like something from 'Le Grand Meaulnes'.
Then it was back to the coast to wander around another of our favourite places. Sidmouth is a popular holiday spot but happily remains unspoilt.

  1. Sidmouth looks delightful. We must have missed it on our trip around that part of the world. I had a cousin close by in Ottery St Mary but that was after our trip. (They lived in Winchester when we visited.)

    1. Ottery is very close by. What a pity you didn't visit. Next time, perhaps?!

  2. Such churches and the monuments in and around them are fascinating, aren't they.
The gate is alluring - what lies behind? Is it a secret garden where fairies dance and marble statues come alive at night?

    1. There should be something special behind a gateway such as that. Unfortunately, although I peered, I couldn't see anything!

  4. Yes, the fourth photo shows a stone font for baptisms, nicely decorated with spring flowers. The sprinkling of water from the font usually leads to a fine example of lung power from the infant!
Hair looking stringy, am contemplating going short.
