At last!

It rained steadily through the night and has continued gently throughout the whole day. What a relief after many weeks of dry weather and cold winds. My seven water butts and four half barrels were all emptied of rainwater, quite unusual for Blighty!  Dusty roof panels are now cleaned and everything looks refreshed. It is a good year for blossom, I think that much of it has set, so today's rain is timely.

The pond level has sunk and the birds walk about in the marshy ground and pull at the moss.

Some of the veg planting is pushing through the ground but most of the plants are still inside waiting for more reliable weather. I'm playing safe and keeping my peas under the cloches. Only the toughies, like these broad beans,  are unprotected.

I can never grow enough rhubarb. (But look at all the evil ground elder - no problem growing that!)

The tulips that didn't get battered  by the wind have been really good this year.

Oranges are slowly ripening in the greenhouse

and the roof beams are dripping with the China tea rose, Maricel Niel.

Soon we shall be able to socialise once more. I've had my hair cut in anticipation, three inches or so chopped off, not cut since last summer.

Life feels good!

  1. Life feels good at the moment - and it shows, you look gorgeous, and so does your garden! Love the tea rose especially.
My May holiday starts today, I so need the break from work, work, work. And that's me, who can work comfortably from home, unlike so many others who can not have that level of safety and comfort. How desperate they must be for a break!
Not much rain has come our way yet, but it will soon be here - hopefully still allowing us some Black Forest hikes.

    1. It is a lovely time of year as the garden comes back to life. Many of my plants came from friends and family members so I am always pleased when I see that they have survived another winter.

  3. As usual, Devon's plants are ahead of Yorkshire's.

    1. Weather conditions have set my garden back by about three weeks. I'm still waiting for things to warm up so that I can plant out and it is MAY for goodness sake!

  4. No amount of watering and washing down gives the same clean fresh result that a good downpour does. We have rain here at present but temperatures in the 20s forecast tomorrow and onwards, yippee. You must be so pleased with your spring garden and your spring haircut, not sure which I like best both are very lovely.

Sung to the first/second verse setting of
    Schubert’s Die Forelle (The Trout).

    Our garden back in Kingston
    Was bare and minuscule
    ‘Twas hardly fit for humans
    More dump than green-glow jewel

We looked in vain for comfort
    To ease our urban woes
But all we got were aphids
    And scent of next-door’s rose

We would have loved a fountain,
    The spume a half-mile high
    But Boeings passing through it
Might fall down from the sky

    We settled for a mill-wheel
    A pump and H-two-Oh
    It tinkled of an eve’ning
    It played adagio.

    It helped seduce a buyer
When we were wont to sell
    Goodbye old thirties’ semi
We wish you well in Hell.

    1. Oh, lovely. I am, however a bit put out by the negative tone of the final line, surely written only to rhyme! How about, 'I hope you suit them well.'

    2. Quite the contrary, I fear. When we both retired we did what people living in and around London can only do once. We sold our titchy, somewhat scruffy, three-bedroom semi ("needs some cosmetic work" said the estate agent) for an obscene sum of money and moved to the Welsh Marches to occupy a then new four-bed, detached residence with integral garage and rather too much garden. Needless to say we could never move back: those semis now run at half a mill

"sell" isn't a difficult word to rhyme. Here's the online Rhyming Dictionary one-syllable offerings: bell, belle, cell, dell, dwell, ell, fell, gel, jell, knell. pell, quell, shell, smell, spell, swell, tell, well, yell, plus 30 - 40 cheat words. I agree that the line is perfunctory but it has an underlining truth. Had I stayed there I would not be writing this comment, or only from beyond the grave. Kingston has hellish traffic density and twice each winter my common cold ineluctably developed into a deep, feverish chest condition with spasmodic coughing (once full-blooded pleurisy) which lasted two months. Since moving to Hereford, twenty years ago, this plague has disappeared. True, Hereford is a dull sort of place but we make our own amusements.

But credit due..., that line deserves attention. How about:

      My lungs no more rebel

Glad to see you erased those strange spam comments.

  13. I really want to thank Dr Emu for saving my marriage. My wife really treated me badly and left home for almost 3 month this got me sick and confused. Then I told my friend about how my wife has changed towards me. Then she told me to contact Dr Emu that he will help me bring back my wife and change her back to a good woman. I never believed in all this but I gave it a try. Dr Emu casted a spell of return of love on her, and my wife came back home for forgiveness and today we are happy again.
