More spuds

How unappetising do these potatoes look?

A few tubers were given to me at the seed swap day in March to try out as a novelty. They have cropped well and I boiled some in their skins, as I usually do, to find out what they would taste like. My first mistake, to boil them in their skins! The skin would not peel away and the flesh disintegrated. So for my second attempt I peeled them. It is difficult to distinguish peel from flesh. However, that done I boiled them carefully and whipped them off the heat the minute they threatened to collapse.

Here is the result, a strange purple potato salad!

I took it to share with friends on Sunday when we had a reduced number book club meeting and celebrated  the host's birthday. The hostess very obligingly came colour co-ordinated!

I've since googled purple potatoes and learnt that they are very beneficial to health, full of antioxidant, and come from the Andes mountain range of South America. Shall I plant some next year? The jury is out.

  1. How funny that the outfit matched the colour of the spuds so perfectly!
These must be a different type of spuds from the blue ones I once had at my Mum's. They looked very much like plums and were of the same colour throughout, but tasted exactly like "normal" spuds. You can see them here, if you are interested: click.

    1. Janet is the queen of colour!
I think that your mum's spuds are the same as mine. They don't taste any different from the usual potatoes, but it is good to know that they have extra health benefits.

  2. I have seen blue colored spuds, but never tasted one and don’t have any desire to eat one anytime soon. Your description of the purple one (although very pretty in the dish) does not encourage me to change my mind. I do like roasted colored carrots though.

  4. Are you familiar with anya potatoes, similar in shape and size to your purple patches but less luridly coloured. Seeemingly only available at Sainsburys. Boiled in their skins and eaten skin and all. Excellent. Their only disadvantage is Sainsburys is in the centre of town and the car park is often choked.

    1. Yes, I've grown Anya in the past. I think its parentage includes Pink Fir Apple which is one of the varieties that I grow.
The virus has finally got me into online shopping and I now get a regular delivery from Sainsburys which saves getting the car out and donning mask and gloves!
