La Mortella, Ischia.

I've wanted to visit the garden of the English composer William Walton for many years. We walked up the hill in the early morning so that we would have plenty of time to explore every corner.

A copy of the Facade stage curtain
which inspired the Simon Verity 'Mouth' sculpture.

There is the sound of water everywhere.
(Sir William had a button in his room that he could press to turn off the water supply when the sound of the fountains interfered with his composing.)

Narrow winding steps meander all about the garden.
The upper slopes give a fine view out to sea.

The temple of the sun
was delightful.

Lovers and cherubs all over the place!

By the time we were ready to leave the light had changed and the garden looked different again.

  1. I thought I recognised that mouth. I worked for Simon Verity on a similar mouth for Leeds Castle back in the 80s.

    1. Tom, PLEASE do some blogs showing the work that you've done. It's very tantalising just hearing about your work in passing without seeing it. You know that I'm nosey.

    2. Everything I have done for the last 25 years is under a confidentiality agreement. I'd love to show but it would have to be face to face. I cannot publish anything.

  2. What a beautiful spot! That lily pond looks like a place where I'd love to sit and meditate. The mouth sculpture is great!

    1. It was a really lovely place for wandering, with small pathways meandering about the hillside and unexpected places, like the sun room, to discover. The sound of running/falling water was delightful.

  3. How cool that you were able to visit this beautiful garden -- I remember Monty Don showed it in his Italian Gardens series. I'd love to see it someday. Thanks for the armchair preview! Best -Beth

    1. I didn't see the Monty Don programme but read a magazine article some years ago that made me wish to visit. It was worth the wait!

  6. By the way, you've got a bunch of spam comments (the generic ones) - I bet they lead back to questionable web sites...
