Do we need to build an ark?

The ground is sodden and we make only brief forays into the garden to dig up some muddy, earth-caked vegetables for lunch. Ever since I invested in three huge water butts it seems to have done little other than rain!

Things are flowering well in the greenhouse but it is now too chill and damp to be in there.
Light levels are low.
I'm pleased with the cuttings that I took from my Meyer lemon bush, they are growing well and starting to fruit.
The last picking of pears has ripened and they are in the cool of the greenhouse in an effort to keep them in good condition for a little longer.
But I'm feeling rather like the scarecrow, not at all impressed with how this autumn has turned out!

  1. Hi Rosemary :) That's a shame about that constant rain! It's dark and dreary here but we don't have the rain you do. I do love your scarecrow even though he looks sad!!

    1. I've taken the shirt off the poor old scarecrow as it's long overdue for a wash. It may well fall from together in the washing machine. Meanwhile, more rain!

    1. Thank you, Parsnip. I do like the pond at this time of year when the vegetation colours and dies, but it annoying when the rain shutters down not to be able to be outside clearing and replanting.

  3. Disappointing, for sure. Hopefully, the sun will shine soon and you'll be able to get outside once again. I'm curious about your greenhouse. Is it heated? If it's not, are your winters not that cold? I'd love to have one, but I'm not sure how I'd go about it in the northeast/midwest United States.

    1. Neither greenhouse is heated. I throw a bit of fleece over the plants in very cold weather, as best I can, but the citrus and other plants hate the cold, damp and low light levels. They get black mould and look very unhealthy, barely making it through the winter months.

  4. When I saw the thumbnail of the scarecrow on the reading list I thought it was you sporting another outfit, Cher. No offence - the image was tiny.

    1. Offence taken - but now I've polished my shoes and had a haircut just so there'll be no further confusion.

  5. We've finally had some badly needed rain on Friday, Saturday and today; not constantly so, there were still a few hours here and there without, so that we were able to go for a run and maybe there will be a walk today.
Our experts say that the ground is still too dry up to 1.80 m deep, still from the extremely hot and dry summer of 2018.
I think this is the perfect time to make oneself cosy at home.

    1. I can hardly believe that our ground is still too dry following the exceptional weather of last year because it feels like a very soggy sponge when I walk on it.
You are right, it's a good time to be home, perhaps in the warmth of the kitchen making biscuits!
