Cambridge, Degas exhibition.

Last Saturday, on a rather dank autumnal day, we went to Cambridge to see the Degas exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum.
But first we walked to Christ's College to look at the gardens.
A good display of window boxes in First Court

and interesting gateways to walk through,

or not!

More gateways elsewhere in town.
Not everywhere open to view.
Our gown buying days are long gone!

And reflections in the glass have spoilt your view of this glorious attire!
I'm always on the hunt for a really zingy-coloured shirt for Himself. But no luck here.

We walked through the market to the museum.

Some rather foggy images taken from a short film of Degas walking along a street in Paris.

It's a very comprehensive show, full of interesting detail, with so much to absorb that we did it in two halves with a break for lunch in the middle.

Apart from the expected images of dancers, horses, portraits and the like, there were some surprises. This lovely landscape I would not have recognised as a Degas. It was hung between a Corot and a Thomas Jones and it was this sort of intelligent hanging, and the accompanying text, that made it such a fascinating show.
Such interesting details, this X-ray of the figurine of a dancer showing the shop-bought armature that Degas had purchased and adapted for his particular use.
We left Cambridge as the rain began to fall
but they were still punting on the river!

  1. Absolutely beautiful. I love the gates that you showed. That would be fun, going down the river like that (minus the rain). -Jenn

    1. Our elder daughter studied at Oxford so we became quite skilled at punting, but I wouldn't like to have to navigate the centre of town with everyone watching. (Took the photo from the top of the park and ride bus!)

    1. Dear Donna, lie on that sofa, read a favourite book, eat chocolate. Trust me, you are no hermit!
      Get well soon x.

  3. Beautiful Cambridge, it does remember me to the time we visited this town. I like that windowbox with the high Nicotiana sylvesters in it, the pile of college scarves in the shop, I still have such a one in my closet and the exhibition of Degas.

    1. Yes, perhaps because Nicotiana are such unlikely plants for a window box I enjoyed the look of it also.

  4. A lovely walk about with you, thanks for taking us along. My favourite two photos are near the top, the one of the window with the over flowing window box & the door just after it. Lovely, both of those photos could be used for a boxed set of note cards.

    1. I earned my living painting illustrations like those two photos, which is probably why I keep seeing similar images all about me!

  5. Everything looks so quaint and pretty. I LOVE that gateway dog plate lol! :) I am a fan of Degas, what a treat! I hope you're doing well Rosemary! I've been off for a little while now, we've been working on getting our yard and home ready for winter. But I think I've found my "groove" again lol! :)

    1. Dear Rain, I'm so glad you are back in your groove! Where did summer go - far too short, I'm not much of a cold weather person.
